Message from Margo

Dear Log Haven Family,
I just returned from an International Women’s Forum Conference in South America (it was an insightful and energizing experience) and I was thrilled to drive up this lush green cool canyon! I know I always say every season is beautiful in Millcreek Canyon, but I adore these sunny days and cool nights – they are my favorite. Even before I unpacked I grabbed Berlin’s leash (my German Shepherd) and headed up Porters Fork for a hike. There is simply nothing better than hiking along Millcreek with Berlin by my side. Into the Label
by Faith Sweeten

“There is not the hundredth part of the wine consumed in this kingdom that there ought to be. Our foggy climate wants help.”

– Jane Austen
, Northanger Abbey

I enjoy reading wine labels. I choose my wine by what I want to enjoy it with, what I’m in the mood for and what I’ve heard or read about. By studying the wine labels, I am hoping to get a glimpse into the intimate details of where the wine came from. The vintners, the landscape, the winery – I love the small tidbits of information that are capitalized on the wine bottle.

Great Merlot from Napa
by Ian Campbell

Recently, I had the fortune to spend a few days in Napa and Sonoma valleys. I hadn’t been there for at least five years, so I was very excited to reacquaint myself with America’s premier wine region. I couldn’t wait to try Napa’s great Cabernet Sauvignons, Carneros’ well-balanced Chardonnays, and Northern Sonoma’s elegant Pinot Noirs. I had no desire whatsoever to drink any Merlot.

California Dreamin’
by Kevin Donovan

On a recent trip to Napa and Sonoma Valleys I had the good fortune to enjoy wonderful food and wine, in both casual and upscale settings. Upon arriving in Napa we headed straight for lunch at Bistro Don Giovanni. The setting was casual in the dining room with a beautiful patio and garden outside, which was full of rosemary hedges, fava beans and varieties of lettuces. The menu was not fussy at all, but full of delicious sounding dishes such as duck confit risotto, whole roasted black bass and lamb meatballs served on a bed of cannelloni beans and fresh vegetables. I thoroughly enjoyed the delicate sheets of pasta tossed with walnuts and a creamy Gorgonzola sauce. On our second day we visited Trefethen Family Vineyards and discovered that they were going to take us to lunch at Don Giovanni’s, I found the wood-fired oven pizzas to be delicious, especially the Proscuitto San Danielle and Bucheron cheese pizza, which was outstanding!
